Daily 5 Freebie!

There are few teachers that have never heard of Daily 5 and there is a good reason for that.  Daily 5 is a great way to manage your literacy block.  It worked great for my first grade students and I enjoyed the independence it gave them.  Below are the materials needed to create a easy to use Daily 5 board in your classroom.  I am sad to say that I don't have a good picture of my Daily 5 board so I will try my best to explain how I made it work in my classroom!

So, here's what you'll need...

Be on the lookout for the small pocket charts that you can find in the Target Dollar Spot before school starts (I used three).  Purchase the wall pocket from IKEA (or any other shoe organizer cut down will work).
Staple the pocket chart and wall pocket to the wall you want to use (I put it under my dry erase board - didn't take up much space and it was easily accessible for the kiddos).  Print, laminate and cut out the pages in the FREEBIE above.  Staple the Daily 5 Labels to the wall pocket and place the corresponding Daily 5 Cards in each pocket.  Next, write or print the students' names on a label and attach to the far right of the pocket charts.  Finally, staple the Round Labels above the pocket chart - we only did 3 rotations a day so I only used cards 1-3.

Making it work...

I introduced Daily 5 like the 2 Sisters suggest in their book.  In our classroom the students would make their choices as part of their morning procedures.  So, every morning they would come in, put their backpack away, bring me their binder, make their Daily 5 choices and start on Morning Work.

Teacher Table...

Teacher table was used for my guided reading groups, of course.  I would place the Teacher Table cards where I wanted them and the students knew that those cards did not move.   For the most part my groups stayed the same so it was low maintenance for me.  I will try to have a post before school starts with more information on how I managed my guided reading groups...especially only having time for 3 rotations in my literacy block.

So, that's pretty much it.  I hope that you are able to get the gest of how Daily 5 worked in my classroom.  I apologize for not have a picture of my Daily 5 board.  If I was still in the classroom and my teacher goodies weren't in the attic I would definitely take one for y'all!  I hope that this information is useful to you in organizing your literacy block.  I also have management systems for Literacy Work Station and Word Work (used with or without Daily 5).  You can check those out by click the pictures below!
