Metamorphosis with a Preschooler: Part One

We have caterpillars!  It all began with a simple question I hear quite often everyday..."Mommy, how you make that?"  In this particular situation, Grayson was referring to the butterfly that was flying in our backyard one afternoon.  My first response was that God made the butterfly which was quickly followed by "How God make that?"  I gave a simple explanation of how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly and it's called metamorphosis.  I then asked if he would like to see how caterpillars changed into butterflies, but he was back to playing in his sandbox with his mighty machines.  Gotta love life with a 2 year old!

During naptime, I got on Insect Lore and bought some caterpillars.   They came in a couple of days later and Grayson was so excited!   We read The Very Hungry Caterpilllar by Eric Carle and discussed how the caterpillars were eggs first and that our caterpillars will eat the food in the container to help them get bigger.
We will be doing some fun crafts and activities that I will share later as we wait for our caterpillars to change into chrysalises.  So stay tuned for Metamorphosis with a Preschooler: Part Two!
