6 Thanksgiving Books & Activities for Little Readers

It has officially happened...my books are NOT in boxes!  I am super excited to see all of the books that I have had stored up for years now sitting on our playroom shelves.  So, that means more posts about books and activities with your kiddos and students in the future.  First up, are some great Thanksgiving books for little readers.  If you have preschool, pre-k or kindergarten kiddos you are planning to read to during the Thanksgiving holiday, these books will be perfect for you!  I also included an idea for each book that you can complete together to enhance your learners' reading experience (be sure to read all the way to the end to get the freebie included).  So, buckle up...here we go!

The Great Turkey Race by Steve Metzger

Get moving with this cute turkey book.  After reading this book work together to create an obstacle course for learners to go through...throw in a little planning and engineering as you construct the course and get those little bodies moving!

My First Thanksgiving by Tomie dePaola

This book is a simple story that explains how the first Thanksgiving relates to the holiday we celebrate today.  To enhance this story have your learner draw and label their Thanksgiving meal just like Tomie did in the story.

Thanksgiving is Here! by Diane Goode

Thanksgiving traditions...this book definitely has them!  This is a silly and descriptive story about Thanksgiving at Grandma's house.  This story is perfect to read for learners to describe Thanksgiving with the five senses charts in my Thanksgiving Pack or by doing an adjective hunt for primary grades.

Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland

There are tons of adorable "I am thankful..." activities you can find online today, and this book is great to get little ones to think about all the things they have to be thankful for.  Enhance this book with a shared writing activity that can be turned into a class book for kiddos to read or this adorable I am Thankful Pumpkin for the Moffatt Girls.

The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy J. Skarmeas

This is the perfect book to use when teaching children the story of Thanksgiving.  It provides a simple storyline for readers to follow.  This story is perfect for little learners to retell to a partner using puppets provided in my Thanksgiving Packet.

I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson

If you have heard of these books before, then you probably already know how great these books are for sequencing activities.  Sequence picture cards with your kiddos to retell the story using this freebie.

I hope that you were able to get some ideas for your classroom or kiddos at home with these great Thanksgiving books.  Feel free to share any activities you do with your favorite Thanksgiving book in the comments below!  Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Love the projects ideas. Be great to include the book Thankful For Today by Roitman. We write each day what we are thankful for.
