Let's Explore: Color Mixing

Colors, colors everywhere!  Last week, G woke up from his nap to find some color mixing gear in the sunroom. (HOORAY for not having colored water in the house)  The activity began as an invitation to play by letting him mix the colored water without any purpose other than playing.  He asked about the new science tool on the table, so I helped him learn how to use a pipette!
Here is what I set out for G to play with...

Materials included:
Cups of water with liquid food coloring (primary colors only)
Pipettes
Measuring Cups
Ice tray
Color Lab Mixer
Plastic Containers
After allowing him to play for a few minutes we read the book The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown.  After reading, we played with the color mixing equipment again, but this time we had a purpose for play!  We tried to make green, orange, purple and then (G's favorite for sure) brown!
This activity was definitely a favorite of G's and allowing him to play with the materials before setting a learning goal made the activity even more fun and engaged!  We will be pulling our color mixing gear out again soon!
